n and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17 marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union.

The long name for this day marks the union of two almost identical official days by the United Nations in 2006. Since 1969, World Telecommunication Day, one of the two days, was celebrated every May 17th. On May 17, 1865, it marked the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union.

Since its inception in 2006, World Information Society Day was also observed on May 17 on this day. Its mission was to place a greater emphasis on the importance of several problems in the field of information and communication technologies.
