World Sea Turtle Day
Every year on June 16th, World Sea Turtle Day highlights the importance of sea turtles. The day also encourages international journalists to investigate the dangers that sea turtles face.
Did you know that sea turtles have been on the earth for more than 100 million years? Sea turtles coexisted with dinosaurs, which means sea turtles coexisted with dinosaurs. There are seven species of sea turtles in the United States. These include green, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and the Olive ridley. The leatherback is the most prominent of these species of sea turtles. The leatherback sea turtle can weighs anything from 550 to 2,000 pounds. This species of sea turtle can grow to six feet in length. Sea turtles live in both fresh and warm waters around the world. However, the flatback can only be found in Australia.

- Some sea turtles can travel more than 1,000 miles to return to their nesting ground
- Sea turtles nest several times, about two weeks apart, and lay up to 125 eggs per nest
- Most sea turtles nest at night, except for the Kemp's ridley
- Leatherback sea turtles can dive nearly 4,000 feet into the sea, while Leatherback sea turtles can dive nearly 4,000 feet into the sea
- Sea turtles are unable to recover into their shells, unlike other species of turtles
- A large group of nesting sea turtles is called a "arribadas," which is Spanish for "arrival"
One more surprising fact is that the nest's temperature determines the sea turtle's sex. In cooler temperatures, male hatchlings are born. Female hatchlings hatchlings hatchlings as the temperatures in the next season are warm. A mix of male and female baby sea turtles is found in a fluctuating environment.
Sadly, nearly every species of sea turtle is listed endangered. Both the hawksbills and Kemp's ridley are seriously endangered. Entanglement in marine waste, habitat destruction, and poaching for meat and eggs are among the top reasons for their endangerment.
