World Penguin Day
On April 25th, the world watched the world over, World Penguin Day honors one of the world's most unusual birds. There are 18 species of penguins in the Southern hemisphere, and all of their natural habitats are in the Southern hemisphere.
Did you know that the Emperor Penguin is the largest of all birds and the largest of the 18 penguin species? There are estimated to be 595,000 adult Emperors today, and from birth, they spend their entire life on Antarctic ice. These wondrous critters incubate their eggs like other birds, but only in temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius – that's cold!
Emperor Penguins are the tallest, at 4 feet tall. Little Blue, the tiniest, stands about 16 inches tall. And Penguins are great swimmers, with the fastest penguin swimmer getting up to 22 mph.

History of the world penguin day has influenced the global penguin day
In 1972, Gerry Wallace wrote the event on his wife's (Aleta's) calendar in Alamogordo, California, where he began in 1972. The Penguin Patrol made the news when they returned to the Naval Weapons Center in Ridgecrest, California. The Adelie penguins' migration northward toward Antartica begins on April 25th, which is also the date that the Adelie penguins begin their migration northward toward Antartica.
