World Martini Day
On June 19th, shake up some gin and vermouth with ice and add a lemon twist. It's World Martini Day!
This adult beverage has since become one of the most popular mixed drinks in the United States. A classic or fine Martini is made with equal parts gin and vermouth. We have a list of terms to get you off to a good start for those that haven't had a Martini.
Martini lingo
- This Martini includes olive brine or juice from the olive jar
- The vermouth is reduced drastically in the Martini, and gin becomes the primary spirit. The ratio is even higher if extra dry tips the cake
- Gibson – Instead of an olive, bartenders garnish the Martini with a pickled onion
- Stirred vs. Stirred – Most bartenders will tell you that the better Martini is stirred. Shaken Martinis tend to be inferior due to a few reasons: ice chips water down the drink, and shaking the Martini adds air to the cocktail. A stirred Martini result in a smoother, fuller experience
- Straight Up – This Martini can be shaken or stirred, but it is strained and served without ice, the opposite of a Martini on the rocks
- In this Martini, Scotch whisky replaces the vermouth whether it be smokey or burnt. The glass is topped with a twist of lemon garnishes
- Wet – Where the dry Martini has less vermouth, this one has more
- With a Twist – The bartender adds a thin strip of citrus peel to the Martini as a garnish or in the drink
Shaken, sparked on the rocks, is what you need to order traditional Martinis.
The Martini's popularity increased as the James Bond films debuted in the late 1960s. In the later decades, clear spirits such as vodka overtook aged spirits like bourbon in market share, surpassing aged spirits like bourbon. However, a balancing act seems to be taking place in recent decades.
The traditional Martini has inspired a number of other cocktails, including the Cosmopolitan, chocolatini, or appletini, over the years.
