World Hydrography Day

It's a known fact that 75% of the earth is covered with water. Although the majority of the earth's water is found in oceans, rivers, swamps, glaciers, and aquifers, the majority of the water is also found in lakes, rivers, swamps, glaciers, and aquifers. Scientists use all of this data to create nautical charts. These charts cover 95,000 miles of shoreline. In addition, the charts cover 3.6 million square nautical miles of waters in the United States alone. Hydrography also helps in other areas, such as transportation and navigation. These include seafloor construction, anchoring, recognizing fish habitats, and laying pipelines and cables.

The world hydrography day is the first in history

In 2005, the IHO established World Hydrography Day. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in the same year that recognized the establishment of this day. The date of June 21st coincides with the founding of the IHO in 1921 under the name International Hydrographic Bureau. In 1970, the IHO was changed to the IHO.
