History

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s annual World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event held by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. World Book Day was first celebrated on April 23, 1995, and it continues to be commemorated on that day.

The original idea was a way to honor author Miguel de Cervantes, who died on April 23rd, his death date. The World Book and Copyright Day will be commemorated on April 23rd, as well as the birth or death of several other well-known writers.

"We have the responsibility, around the world, to protect these freedoms and encourage reading and writing in order to combat illiteracy and hunger, improve the foundations of peace, as well as safeguarding publishing-related occupations and professionals," the World Book and Copyright day's founders say.
