Every year, May 8 is celebrated as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement founder Henry Dunant, who was born on this day in 1828, is commemorated on this day. The day is designed to broaden the public's knowledge of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The International Committee of the Red Cross was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in the year 1863, as a private group aiming to provide rapid and effective humanitarian assistance to people in war and disaster-affected areas. Under the human rights legislation, the Red Cross committee consists of 17 and 25 members who are empowered to plan lifesaving activities and protect the victim's reputation on a national and international basis.

Red Crescent Societies are affiliated and work in collaboration with the World Red Cross to support with the movement's operations. National Red Crescent societies and Red Cross Societies are present in virtually every region around the world.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a worldwide humanitarian movement that was established to protect human life and health, ensure equality for all human beings, and eliminate and alleviate human suffering.
