Druggist Edward Berners served the first ice cream sundae in 1881, according to Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Customer George Hallauer ordered an ice cream soda on a Sunday, according to the article. Berners came up with a compromise and served the ice cream in a dish without the soda since laws at the time barred the selling of ice cream sodas on the Sabbath.
