Thomas Saint, a British entrepreneur and a pioneer, received the first patent for a sewing machine model in 1790. He wanted his design to sew on leather and canvas. However, he never promoted it, and no evidence of the style other than his drawings could be found. William Newton Wilson, a London Patent Office en 1874, discovered Saint's drawings in the London Patent Office. Wilson created a working model with some minor changes.
