NATIONAL HOAGIE DAY – May 5

Many people go by various names, but National Hoagie Day, May 5th, honors a hero of a sandwich!

The hoagie goes by several other aliases in lieu of a hero. To name a few of the sub, grinder, Italian, toro, or baguette are only a few of the sub's numerous names. Some of those names reveal how we make a hoagie, as well as how we make a hoagie. We cut a long Italian roll or French bread lengthwise and fill it with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces. Pile it high with your own combination of fillings and enjoy it hot or cold.

About the word "hoagie": "hoagie" refers to the word "hoagie"

In 1953, Italians working at Hog Island, a World War II-era shipyard in Philadelphia, packed their lunch to work every day. They introduced the sandwich by combining different meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. It was referred to as the "Hog Island" sandwich, which was later reduced to the "hoagie" in the "hoagie."
