Don't go for the curry powder when making a true curried chicken. Curry powder made its way into dishes by way of Britain. Many of the English's long-lived presence in India left a longing for the flavors of the East on their palates. Curry powder and other curried meat recipes existed as early as the 1700s, but curried chicken and other curried meat dishes gained traction during the British Raj, which began in 1858.
