The cake is favored by more people on National Chocolate Cake Day, which is why more people love it. We're more often than not, we celebrate our special occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings with cake. Why not have chocolate cake on January 27th every year?
Chocolate was popular in America until the 1830s or 40s, but not as a drink until the 1830s or 40s. Chocolate cakes, as we think of them today, are not common then. According to the Dover Post, the chocolate cake was invented in 1765 when a doctor and a chocolate maker team up in an old mill. To make a thick syrup, they ground up cocoa beans between massive millstones. The liquid was poured into molds shaped like cakes that were supposed to be turned into a drink. In The Lady's Receipt Book, a well-known Philadelphia cookbook author Eliza Leslie published the first chocolate cake recipe in 1847. This dish called for chopped chocolate rather than chocolate cakes we know today. Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa, among other cooks of the time, all contributed to the chocolate cake's creation and were prolific cookbook writers.
In the late 1920s, O. Duff and Sons, a company, first boxed cake mix, was first produced. In 1947, Betty Crocker introduced their first dry cake mixes.
