In the early 1800s, combining popcorn and molasses was popular. However, caramel was also popular, and with the introduction of Cracker Jack, the success of the candy was ever-increasing. The popcorn chain dabbled with making a new snack, which was invented by Frederick Rueckheim. Louis, an immigrant from Germany to Chicago, enlisted his brother, Louis, to assist. Their snack was ready for an introduction to the masses after adding molasses and nuts.
Cracker Jack became a hit on the stage at the 1893 World's Fair in the United States, as well as other popular foods. Other foods to grab the public's attention at similar expositions include cotton candy and the ice cream cone. Although they weren't invented there nor did they make their debut, they did capture the imagination and make a lasting impression there.
However, something happened in 1908 to link Cracker Jack and baseball permanently in the American psyche, as well as the company's growth. Jack Norworth, a young entertainer, penned a catchy tune referring to Cracker Jack and the American pastime. The song "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" not only caused sales of the snack food to soar, but the game's followers continue to sing the song at every game.
