Despite being classified as a winter squash, acorn squash is related to the same species as all summer squashes, including zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.
The most common variety comes in a mostly green outer shell, with occasionaly with a splotch of orange on its side or top. However, gardeners and cooks will have a choice among the Golden Acorn and the White Acorn. This versatile squash also grows in a variety of shades of color.
The acorn squash has the same shape as its name, an acorn. They usually weigh between one and two pounds and grow between four and seven inches long. This hardy squash also stays for several months, making it a great addition to your winter basket for yumminess. Just be sure to store it in a cool, dry location.
