International Romani Day is always observed on April 8th each year. It honors the first major international meeting of Romani representatives, held in Chelsfield, near London, from April 7–12 1971.

Romani were first traveling court musicians in parts of what is now India and Pakistan.

The Romani have their own language and culture. They immigrated to Turkey, France, Spain in the Middle Ages. Flamenco emerged in Spain, where their history blended with Iberian, Jewish, Muslim, and Moorish culture, becoming known as Flamenco. They are one of the most persecuted populations, threatened by both the Nazis and Communists, as well as several local governments in Asia and Africa.

Many Romani immigrated to the United States, Canada, Brazil, Brazil, and other nations in the Americas in the early 1800s. According to one million Roma in the United States, and 800,000 in Brazil, there are 800,000 in Brazil.
