International Merlot Day - November 7

The word "merlot" is thought to be a diminutive of merle. This is the French word for the blackbird, which most likely refers to the grape's color. Merlot wine was first produced in Bordeaux, France, and was first exported in Bordeaux, France. Some mistakenly believe that cabernet sauvignon, a different grape, is the most widely planted in Bordeaux. This is not the case, however, this is not the case. More hectares in Bordeaux are dedicated to growing Merlot than any other grape. Merlot is Italy's 5th most planted grape. The grape is Israel's second most widely planted grape.

Other regions that produce Merlot include: Bordeaux, Italy, and Israel.
