What is World Refugee Day?

WORLD REFUGEE DAY

The date of World Refugee Day is June 20. The day is dedicated to raising concerns of the refugee crisis around the world.

Refugees are someone who left his or her homeland and country due to "a well-founded fear of persecution," according to the United Nations' definition of refugees "because of his/her ethnicity, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion."

According to the World Economic Forum, one out of every 113 people on the planet is now a refugee. Around the world, someone is displaced every three seconds, compelled from their homes by war, war, and persecution.

People are refugees within their own country, with 40.3 million being people displaced within their own country.
