What is World Penguin Day?

On April 25th, the world watched the world over, World Penguin Day honors one of the world's most unusual birds. There are 18 species of penguins in the Southern hemisphere, and all of their natural habitats are in the Southern hemisphere.

Did you know that the Emperor Penguin is the largest of all birds and the largest of the 18 penguin species? There are estimated to be 595,000 adult Emperors today, and from birth, they spend their entire life on Antarctic ice. These wondrous critters incubate their eggs like other birds, but only in temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius – that's cold!

Emperor Penguins are the tallest, at 4 feet tall. Little Blue, the tiniest, stands about 16 inches tall. And Penguins are great swimmers, with the fastest penguin swimmer getting up to 22 mph.
