On a portable, magnetic tape videocassette, the VCR is an electro-mechanical device that captures analog audio and analog video from television. Images and sound can now be played back at a more convenient time. In 1956, Charles Ginsburg, an American engineer at Ampex, which produced one of the first practical videotape recorders, was born.
