What is National Underground America Day?
## Every year on may 14, it is national underground america day in the United States.
National Underground America Day, architect Malcolm Wells' "unofficial" National holiday, was established in 1974 by architect Malcolm Wells. Wells (1926 – 2009) is regarded as "the father of modern earth-sheltered architecture" in the field. Living in a modern earth-sheltered building of his own design was a writer, illustrator, draftsman, cartoonist, columnist, and solar consultant who practiced what he preached by living in a modern earth-sheltered building of his own design. He took up the challenge of underground architecture because he believed the Earth's surface was "made for living plants, not industrial plants."
Wells continued his struggle against underground living until the end of his life in 2004.
