What is National Tennessee Day?

We recognize each state in the order they entered the union, beginning with Hawaii and ending with Hawaii on Independence Day. We feature a small part of each state's past, foods, and the people who make up the state. There's so much more to discover, we can't help but celebrate our beautiful country even more.

During the Civil War, Tennessee was under heavy burdens as the gateway to the deep south. Tennessee was often as divided as the nation during the civil war as a slaveholding state with many Union sympathizers and Union occupying units. In every county, it was the only state to have a war or skirmish.

Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee's two main cities, have abundant talent and draw even more. It should be no surprise that Tennessee's music and entertainment industry thrives. For more than 75 years, the Grand Ole Opry has been a pillar of radio shows and has captivated audiences of all ages.

The state also claims to royalty. The King of Rock and Roll built his home in Graceland. Today it is the most frequently visited private residence after the White House. Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, was born in Memphis, too.
