This batter-made breakfast dish dates back more than 30,000 years and is also known as Johnnycakes, griddle cakes, or hotcakes. In fact, it may be the oldest breakfast dish in history.

When revelers would dine before fasting, it became a traditional part of Fat Tuesday (Shrove Tuesday) celebrations. They still do! Fruit and other fillings can be made and filled with thin cakes. Usually, though, they're stacking and drizzled with flavored syrup.

Topping, add fruit, nuts, or whipped topping.
