What is National Mason Jar Day?

National Mason Jar Day, November 30th, honors an ingenious device that has been uniting families for generations.

We simply enjoy the summer flavors in the midst of winter by opening a jar of fruit preserves or spicy salsa. The Mason jar rescues fruits and vegetables from the garden for those who like to pickle. We make them sweet or spicy, from green beans to watermelon.

Although food preservation has existed for centuries, John Landis Mason of New Jersey of New Jersey made home canning safe. A pioneering concept was born by the young tinsmith's patent #22186 for a "Improvement in screwneck bottles."

Gardeners have been canning since then. They stocked their pantries from their victory gardens. Some people padded their wallets with their heirloom collections. And many more people have expressed their bounty as colorful gifts. In shabby chic vases or as an artfully painted desk caddy, Mason jars serve double duty as stunning DIY projects.

However, we still use these versatile vessels, this holiday delight in their existence and their use.
