Audiences and stadiums are packed each year with proud families and friends eager to attend the commencement ceremonies of high schools, colleges, and universities. Tassels dangle from the mortarboards in the colors of their prestigious companies. Graduates and families are preparing for the big day with each gown crisply pressed, graduates and families.

Grads, as your day approaches, square your shoulders, keep your gazes steady on the future, as your day approaches. In this moment, pause to consider all of your challenges. Move your tassel when the principal or dean reads your name and your diploma is in hand.

High school and undergraduate students start with their tassels on the right and then move their tassels to the left after graduation. For those earning graduate degrees or higher, the tassel begins on the left and progresses to the right after completing their higher-level degrees. These traditions of moving the tassel have only recently gained traction in the last 50 years.
