Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts, invented Marshmallow Creme, a sweet marshmallow-like spread. Emma and Amory Curtis of Melrose, Massachusetts, 1913, invented Snowflake Marshmallow Creme in 1913 during World War I. The first known example of a Fluffernutter was a recipe for a peanut butter and marshmallow creme sandwich.
In 1920, Query sold his Marshmallow Creme to Durkee-Mower, Inc., who renamed it Marshmallow Fluff. Over 100 years ago, they continue to sell it under the same name today.
Where did the word "fluffernutter" originate from? Well, the advertising company for Durkee-Mower developed it in 1960 in an effort to successfully sell the peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich.
