Dates are believed to have originated in Iraq and have been a staple food of the Middle East and Indus Valley for thousands of years. They have been cultivating from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, some as early as 4000 BCE.

The Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California in 1765.

Dates are a convenient source of dietary potassium and are an excellent source of dietary potassium. The sugar content in ripe dates is about 80% of the fruit. Protein, fabric, and trace elements of boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc make up the remainder of the date.
