What is National Banana Bread Day?

National Banana Bread Day, a well-known food holiday, is celebrated annually on February 23rd.

Bakers know that to make sweet and delectable banana bread, they must use completely ripe, mashed bananas. The resulting quick bread is moist and almost cake-like. Although some recipes call for yeast, most don't. Either way, the finished product makes a delectable sliced snack. For an even more satisfying snack, toast it and add butter.

Baking soda and baking powder made banana bread and other quick breads common features in American cookbooks in the 1930s. In its 1933 Balanced Recipes cookbook, Pillsbury's included banana bread recipes. The banana bread's acceptance was boosted by the publication of Chiquita Banana's Recipe Book in 1950.
