What is International Students' Day?

International Students Day, November 17th, commemorates the University of Prague's Nazi storming on November 17th. Around the world, the day also promotes student activism.

University students haven't shied away from expressing their political views, and in several cases, students have expressed themselves politically in the form of protests. In 1939, one of the first student protests took place. Students at the University of Prague protested the German occupation of Czechoslovakia this year. During the protest, a student of the medical faculty was shot, wounded, and later died. Thousands of students turned his funeral into an anti-Nazi protest.

The Nazis rounded them up and sent over 1,200 students to concentration camps. The Nazis also ordered the closings of all the universities and colleges in Czechoslovakia. However, the most horrific crime occurred on November 17th, 1939, when the Nazis executed nine students and professors without trial.
