The Navy's importance increased during the Revolutionary War. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases around the region, including the world's largest Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

Submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II below the sea. Although experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not participate in a significant portion of the Navy inventory until World War II. Even though they were also armed, subs became absolutely indispensable for surveillance and rescue at that time.

With the introduction of the plane, the Navy became one of the Air Force's most important stations. As a result, the Navy converted ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam, as well as the Navy and Air Defense fleets, are providing the sea and air defense fleets.

The Navy has always been and deserved to be a point of special pride to the American people from its humble beginnings. Its history is certainly one to inspire such sentiments, and I am sure that such a commemoration as planned would be a timely reminder."
