NATIONAL WHIPPED CREAM DAY – January 5

National Whipped Cream Day

To celebrate National Whipped Cream Day, add a little something special to desserts on January 5th. Add whipped cream! Not only does it add creaminess and a bit of pizzaz, but it also makes the difference between the ho-hum or a celebration type of beverage or dessert.

This holiday falls on Reddi-Wip founder Aaron "Bunny" Lapin's birthday (January 5, 1914 – July 10, 1999). In 1948, Lapin invented Reddi-Wip, and the holiday honors whipped cream's contributions to the dessert world.

Although most often sweetened and flavored with vanilla, whipped cream dresses up desserts with other flavors as well. Whisted cream adds a delightfulness to pies, cakes, and beverages with a hint of coffee or chocolate or the zing of orange or mint. Of course, we call it by other names, such as Chantilly cream or creme Chantilly, milk snow, or snow cream.

Whippe cream was sweetened and aromatized in recipes from the 16th century. Naturally separated cream is whipped, most with willow or rush branches, and the resulting foam on the surface would be skimmed off and drained, a process that took an hour or more.

In 1673, the English word whipped cream first appeared in 1673. The term snow cream has continued to be used throughout the 17th century.
