National Spanish Paella Day

National Spanish Paella Day is the annual celebration of National Spanish Paella Day on March 27th. Paella, a Spanish rice dish, has become extremely popular and is widely distributed around the world. It appeared in its modern form in Valencia, on Spain's east coast, in the mid-19th century.

Workers in the fields would make the rice dish in a flat pan over a fire at lunchtime. They mixed in whatever they could find, such as rabbits, snails, and vegetables. Chicken was added later, for special occasions. Paella has spread to every region of Spain and around the world, using virtually every form of ingredient that goes well with rice.

Paella is available in several forms. Saffron and olive oil are the key ingredients in this recipe. Saffron is a basic spice that also turns the rice into a stunning golden color.
