National Smoothie Day
National Smoothie Day, June 21st, celebrates the refreshing beverage brought to you by the blender, capitalizing on the bountiful fruits and vegetables available this time of year.
Smoothies transform our fruits and vegetables into a refreshingly refreshing drink by using fresh ingredients, whole grains, and punches of flavor. Some smoothies contain herbs and spices, raising the flavor level. A variety of combinations are available, including milk, yogurt, juice, and a blend of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables.
If you're looking for vegetables to your smoothie, you may be a little green, but don't knock it until you've tried it. Both fruit and vegetable smoothies will pack in the vitamins, but be aware that the calories will also add up. Making smart choices will help keep your smoothies on the healthier side of your smoothies.
- Limit your boosters – Ingredients like nut butters, seeds, grains, and protein powders raise the fat and calories in your body. Although these ingredients add flavor and even nutrients, they can be used in small amounts. You can also limit them to 1-2 per smoothie
- Smoothies can become oversized, just like our regular meals. Control portion size – Smoothies can become oversized. To ensure that your smoothie is complete, monitor the portion size for your key ingredients so that the calories and fat add up to a balanced serving. For example, one cup of berries, half a cup of yogurt, and a teaspoon of a nut butter should not put you over
- Prepared juices are better than juices – prepared juices are calories-rich. If you need a little more sweetness, try adding a calorie-free sweetener or restricting the juice to just a splash
- Spinach, beets, kale, and zucchini are only a few of the vegetables that add vitamins and fiber without adding a lot of calories. And these veggies don't have any offputting flavors
- Add a little spice – cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and turmeric – and turmeric add a little spice without adding calories. They also provide us with other health benefits as well. For example, Cinnamon can help lower blood sugar and blood pressure
Smoothies make a great meal substitute, as well. A smoothie can be the answer whether you're craving something sweet or need a boost in energy.
