National Lamington Day
Every year on July 21st, National Lamington Day in Australia commemorates Australia's most popular culinary dish, the Aussie lamington. In addition, the day encourages people to eat a lamington while spreading the word about this delectable dessert.
Lord Lamington, Governor of Queensland, Australia, from 1896 to 1901, receives praise for constructing the lamington. A sponge cake dipped in chocolate is the focal point of Lamington's dish. The baker adds fine pieces of coconut after being dipped in chocolate.
Lord Lamington was involved in all of the stories about how the lamington came about. According to one story, his chef was called up on short notice to feed unexpected visitors. With the limited number of ingredients he had on hand, the chef created the cake. However, the guests were so impressed with the delectable cake that they asked for the recipe that they requested for the recipe.
This delectable cake is the result of a mix-up in the kitchen, according to another story. A maidservant mistakenly converts Lord Lamington's favorite sponge cake into melted chocolate in this tale. Lord Lamington suggests coating the chocolate-covered sponge cake with coconut, but not wanting to waste the food. In addition to being a delectable snack, the coconut will prevent his fingers from getting sloppy. Lord Lamington, satisfied, ate the mistakenly baked cake.
The first mention of the cake appears in an 1896 newspaper relating to events honoring Lord Lamington. Recipes were soon followed, as well as recipes. The first recipe for lamington appeared in the Queensland Country Life newspaper as early as 1900.
No matter how lamington came about, Aussies and New Zealanders made it one of their favorites straight away. The delectable delicacy is served with strawberry jam in the center and a dollop of whipped cream on top. Other lamington flavors include jaffa, lemon, and raspberry. On Australia Day, the cake is particularly popular.
