National Houseplant Appreciation Day
Planting house plants is one of the easiest ways to improve a space. Many of us will skip some of our regular activities, including houseplant care, during the busy holidays. On January 10th, National Houseplant Appreciation Day serves as a reminder to give your houseplants a little extra attention to keep them flourishing.
Many with green thumbs know that having houseplants comes with many health benefits, some of which are even supported by science.
Houseplant benefits
- Boost productivity – According to some studies, indoor plants can increase productivity and results in the workplace and in school
- Caring for plants has therapeutic benefits. Reduce anxiety – Caring for plants provides therapeutic benefits. Indoor gardening can help to reduce the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and dementia, which are similar to outdoor gardening
- Plants can improve indoor air quality, according to a report published in 1989 by NASA that showed that plants can improve indoor air quality. This report makes sense since we all know from elementary science that plants consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The more plants you have, the more effective they are at improving air quality. Specific plant species are more effective than others, as well as others. For example, Boston ferns, spider plants, ficus, rubber trees, and bamboo palms clean the air more effectively than other plants
- Improved humidity – Especially in dryer climates and in the winter months – as plants release moisture into the air, they raise the humidity in a room. Humidity raises a household's comfort level, and we can also breathe more easily when the humidity in our homes is balanced. In addition, plants are prettier than humidifiers
As you can see, houseplants are a lot to be appreciated. Houseplants provide the outdoors inside, where it can be enjoyed all year round, in addition to these benefits. They infuse our homes with color.
You don't have to have a green thumb to care for houseplants either. Start with forgiving plants such as pathos, philodendron, sansevieria, or spider plant. These plants will bounce back if you forget to water them, and they will not whine if you mistakenly overwater them.
