National Hero Day

National Hero Day, on October 8th, honors those we look up to and inspire us to be the best person we can possibly be.

Many of us will name the characteristics that make a person more capable, intelligent, kinder, and more than the average human being if asked to define the word hero. Many of us will name the characteristics that make a person more than average human beings. They are the people who give when they have nothing to give. Heroes perform before anyone else knows there's a problem. They volunteer to bring someone else before them.

Our heroes may be the first responders who save us from a dangerous situation. They may be a mentor, like a parent or a teacher. Heroes lead us through their examples as role models and heroes. They live their lives in such a way that we're proud to know them and want to follow their example.

And heroes, true-life heroes, are rarely acknowledged. That's why National Hero Day encourages you to recognize the heroes in your life.

Heroes All Around Us Some wear uniforms, such as Christy McIntosh of Pensacola, FL, who served in the US Army Reserves, like Christy McIntosh of Pensacola, FL, who served in the US Army Reserves. Zac Clark of Ohio, a high-school football player, whose quick thinking and determination lifted a Volkswagen off of his neighbor, saving his life.

Other heroes inspire us to take action or lead a healthier life. They may do this by their words, like Jim Cook of Oklahoma, who wrote to columnist Jim Priest, giving him a little bit about character and love. A true-life hero may take us on a journey we can only imagine taking. Dr. Garrett Reisman, a former NASA astronaut and engineer who later joined SpaceX, is a NASA astronaut and engineer who later joined SpaceX.

Things happen when another kind of hero makes it happen. Some heroes go to great lengths to get a job done, whether it's filling a need or making the impossible happen. For example, Donald Harris of New Jersey, who by day was a real estate manager, answered a letter from Santa via the United States Postal Service's Letters to Santa service at Christmastime, but not to Santa. His answer to a plea to make a father's life simpler was to enlist his associates in purchasing a townhouse for the family at a much cheaper price.

Heroes come in many forms, as you can see. They rescue us, inspire us, and most importantly, they believe in us.
