Percy S. Truesdell, a chemist and candy manufacturer, receives the award for the modern gumdrop. Truesdell converted the once hard, poorly flavored glob of sugar into the smooth, chewy delight we enjoy today, according to articles published after his death in 1948. The chemist changed the consistency of the candy by experimenting with the amount of starch used while at the University of Ohio. He worked with the Snyder-Chafee Company until 1915. Truesdell Candy Manufacturing Company was founded and incorporated in 1916 by Truesdell. At his death, he was regarded as the Gumdrop King at his burial.
