National Fried Clam Day

On July 3rd, National Fried Clam Day is celebrated annually. Fried clams are a popular dish in New England states. These delectable nuggets are sold or roadside restaurants in Seaside, and they are often the first source for anyone looking for them. The clams are dipped in milk and coated with a mixture of regular, corn, and/or pastry flour. The coated clams are fried in oil at the time, but the coated clams are not fried in oil. They can be clam strips (sliced pieces of hard-shell clams) or whole soft-shell clams. Whole soft-shell clams have a fuller flavor. However, some restaurants in the United States have removed the clam's neck.

Lawrence Henry "Chubby" Woodman and his partner Bessie opened a small concession stand on Main Street in Essex, Massachusetts, in 1914. Chubby dug himself's small grocery items, baked potato chips, and fresh clams. The company was slow at first, but it was slowing at first. But things began to change on July 3, 1916.

Chubby screamed to a local fisherman named Tarr, who was visiting the stand on the day, "Business is slower than a couple of snails headed uphill."

"Why don't you fry up some of your clams?" Tarr, while nibbling on the delectable homemade potato chips, noticed a bucket of clams nearby and jokingly said, "Why don't you fry up some of your clams?" jokingly said. You'll never have to worry about having enough customers if they're as good as your potato chips, you'll never have to worry about having enough customers." Fried clams were unheard of, and two other customers rewarded Tarr's comment with cold stares. One said, "That's ridiculous." "Clams have shells," the other one said. "I wasn't serious," the poor fisherman muttered, "I wasn't serious." It was a joke. "I know you can't fry clams like chips," says the author.

Chubby and Bessie began to worry about it after the three men were gone. What if they did fry up some of the clams and sold them? If they were delectable, they would have found a way to raise the demand for their own shucked clams. Bessie tossed a slab of lard into the fry pan that was traditionally used to make potato chips. They shucked some clams and tried different batters, gaining some locals to try them out. They knew they were on to something big when the overall verdict was "delicious."

July 4, 1916

Chubby and Bessie served the first fried clams to Essex residents on the fourth of July parade the next day. The Yankee appetite has never been the same since. A year later, a Boston fish market announced that "now is ready to serve the new popular dish, fried clams." And Howard Johnson, the owner of a chain of restaurants on the East Coast, wanted to know how to make fried clams from Chubby.

Lawrence and Bessie wrote what they considered to be important family activities on the backside of their wedding certificate. Wilbur and Henry's two oldest sons were born on the dates of their two oldest sons' birth dates. The third line was the other significant birth date in the family's family. "We fried the first fried clam—in the town of Essex, July 3, 1916."

Clams are still frying at Woodman's, where it all began, more than 100 years and six generations later.
