If you live in a cold climate like Chester Greenwood and had large, protruding ears, as Chester Greenwood did, you may be grateful for his invention. The man who discovered a better way to keep our ears warm all winter long is the man who discovered National Earmuff Day.

After a day of ice skating in the cold, 15-year-old Chester came up with a plan to keep his big ears warm. Chester soon had a working model after his grandfather, who stitched tufts of fur among wire loops of wire, had a working model.

He was granted a patent for his latest invention on March 13, 1877. It was one of many that would earn. Greenwood was a prolific entrepreneur, but the earmuff is his most well-known piece.

Greenwood made these ear protectors for almost 60 years, providing jobs for the people in the Farmington, Maine area for almost 60 years.
