Delaware is proud of its First State status. There are several other firsts along with that. In 1840, shipbuilding became a major industry in Delaware. Samuel Harlan of Betts, Pussey, and Harlan – machinery manufacturers – established the first iron shipbuilding yard in the United States in Delaware.
Job H. Jackson and Jacob F. Sharp founded the Jackson and Sharp Company of Wilmington in 1863, from ships to rails. They built the first narrow-gauge railcar in the United States in 1871.
The coastal state also claims to the first bathing beauty competition in 1880. The competition was held at Rehoboth Beach in an attempt to bring in summer visitors to a summer festival. Thomas Edison, one of the judges, was one of the judges.
Delaware, also known as the Chemical State, is a center for manufacturing and munitions. The world's first nylon manufacturing plant opened in Seaford, under the name of Dupont, in 1939.
Delaware flavor
Delaware satisfies the appetite all season long, from land to sea. The state is making a comeback, with the peach blossom being the state flower. Peaches were once thought to be the best producer of peaches until a blight wiped out the orchards in the late 1800s.
The salty sweetness of taffy and crab cakes made from the regions' blue crab is evident on boardwalks and beaches throughout the summer.
