National Curried Chicken Day

Every year on January 12th, curried chicken enthusiasts aspire to National Curried Chicken Day. They pack their dishes with a variety of flavorful spices and serve them to their friends and family.

Don't go for the curry powder when making a true curried chicken. Rather, stew the chicken in a sauce made from clarified butter (known as ghee) onions, garlic, and a medley of spices such as cumin, coriander, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric. Chilies and tomatoes are among the other ingredients on the menu.

Curry powder made its way into dishes by way of Britain. Many of the English's long-lived presence in India left a longing for the flavors of the East on their palates. Curry powder and other curried meat recipes existed as early as the 1700s, but curried chicken and other curried meat dishes gained traction during the British Raj, which began in 1858.
