On April 18th, the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, which was established in 1977, sponsors and promotes National Columnists' Day annually. Ernie Pyle, a Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent who died while on duty in Okinawa, Japan, died on this same day in 1945.
