NATIONAL CHEDDAR DAY – February 13

National Cheddar Day

On February 13th, National Cheddar Day will have some cheesy goodness!

To be honest, grilled cheese would be buttered bread without melt-able slices piled high; burgers would be lacking a spark without a zinging ooze; mac & cheese would be...mac. So many of our popular American dishes would not be the same without a slice of cheddar's delectableness.

Cheddar history

This love of cheddar has a long history. How exactly did cheddar become a staple in so many of our favorite dishes? Let us tell you!

In the 12th century, Cheddar, England's village of Cheddar, first appeared in the village of Cheddar. Although cheddar accounts for more than a quarter of all cheese sold in the United States, it is a royal hit in the United Kingdom, where it was made. In fact, more than half of the cheese sales in the United Kingdom go to cheddar.

Peter McIntosh, the country's most popular cheesemaker, brought his cheese-making skills to Tillamook County, Oregon, where it rains a lot and the grass was always green. He supervised the locals all he knew, and earned himself the name "Cheese King of the Coast" in honor of his service. Today, there are more cows than people in Tillamook, and those local farmers have since formed the Tillamook County Creamery Association, a farmer-owned cooperative.

No wonder cheddar finds its way into so many recipes or a simple snack. After a delectable bite, we're back for more, bite after delectable bite.
