National Cellophane Tape Day

On May 27th, we could be in a tumultuous situation as we commemorate National Cellophane Tape Day. Can you imagine where we would be without this device? Wrapping presents would be marginally more difficult without it.

This invention can be found in every household and office, also known as invisible tape or Scotch Tape. In 1930, Richard Gurley Drew (June 22, 1899 – December 14, 1980) invented the invisible tape. He made the tape from cellulose and originally called it cellulose tape. He began his career at the 3M corporation in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he invented a masking tape for the automotive industry in 1925.

The new adhesive was originally intended to seal Cellophane bags sold in supermarkets and bakeries, but it fell short of its time. DuPont introduced heat-sealed cellophane by the time all its drawbacks were addressed, the company's drawbacks were sorted out. However, the Cellophane packaging still had some benefits.

3M discovered a market in both the home and office with a resounding recommendation from customers. Many of us have several rolls of it, as well as several others. For a roll or two, check the closet for a roll or two. Another one will be added to the garbage can. Count another on the desk, perhaps. Tape is stored in large quantities in offices, schools, teachers, and employees.
