National Brownie Day

On National Brownie Day, brownie enthusiasts around the country enjoy one of their favorite baked goods each year on December 8th.

The chocolate brownie is a hit in the United States, with the blonde brownie coming in second, with the chocolate brownie coming in second. A blonde brownie is often described as a blondie because it is made with brown sugar and no chocolate.

The first brownies we are familiar with today are found in regional cookbooks and newspapers around the turn of the twentieth century. The 1904 Laconia, NH Home Cookery, the 1904 Chicago, Illinois Service Club Cook Book, and The Boston Globe's April 2, 1905, are three early examples. Fannie Merritt Farmer's recipe appeared in an edition of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book in 1906.

Over the years, three myths have risen in importance: the brownie's invention has been questioned.

  • A chef added melted chocolate to biscuit dough in an accidental mixing of ingredients
  • When mixing the batter, a forgetful cook left out the flour
  • When a housewife did not have baking powder, she improvised to make this new treat. The wife decided to serve her guest flattened cakes
