National Blueberry Pie Day

On April 28th, each year ushers in blueberry pie-making season. The blueberry harvest begins in April and lasts until September, giving us a long season full of blueberry delight.

Since the early American settlers arrived, we've been enjoying blueberries in pies. The first recorded recipe for blueberry pie appeared in the Appledore Cook Book in 1872. Blueberries are plentiful in Maine, so it's no surprise that blueberry pie is the state's official dessert.

Thanks to Elizabeth Coleman White's findings and Dr. Frederick V. Coville's study, this once-wild berry became domesticated in the early 1900s. Wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production before their efforts. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to find them out where they grew naturally.

These amazingly delicious berries are coming to fruition today, thanks to the efforts of White and Coville. These vibrant berries pack a punch in vitamins and health benefits from farm to table, or farmer to the grocer to you. They make a delectable dessert or sauces, and make delectable desserts or sauces. They make a great snack on their own or enhance a dish. Whatever this berry does, it does with panache!

A. Pies and tarts are similar. Both are made with a pastry crust made of sweet or savory fillings. However, a pie is usually made in a dish with sloped sides, while a tart pan has straight sides and a removable bottom. Pies can be made with or without a top crust; tarts only have a bottom crust.
