How to Make a banana split
The banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat and is traditionally served in drug stores, soda fountains, and ice cream parlors. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream between the banana slices. In 1904, a 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist at Tassel's Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, initiated the first banana split. At the store's soda fountain, David Evans Strickler loved inventing sundaes. Strickler's first "banana-based triple ice cream sundae" was sold for only 10 cents, much less than half of all the other sundaes.

The national banana split day is the longest in national banana split day history
We were unable to locate the maker of National Banana Split Day, but we were unable to find him. However, David Strickler's hometown, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, proudly honors his creation every August with a festival. They also installed a permanent marker at the pharmacy where Strickler first made his famous banana split in 2013. The banana split was commemorated by the United States Post Office and the town of Latrobe in 2016 with a 47-cent "forever stamp" depicting the banana split. It was one of five stamps in the "Soda Fountain Favorites" series, one of five stamps. For a time, Latrobe residents could be given a cancellation plaque recognizing their claim to fame.
