International Joke Day
On July 1st, the International Joke Day falls at the halfway point in the year. The day promotes laughter. What better way to begin the second half of the year than by chuckling and with a smile?
The laughter generated by a good joke is universal human experience. A good joke is one way to spark laughter in both cultures and all cultures, and all peoples laugh, and a good joke is one way to spark laughter. And with that laughter comes good health. After just one minute of hearty laughter, William Fry, a one-time laughter researcher, said it took ten minutes on a rowing machine for his heart rate to reach its peak.

The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore found the benefits of laughing at a good joke. The study found that subjects with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in several situations compared to those without heart disease; on the other hand, they were more vulnerable to anxiety and hostility than others without heart disease.
Art of the joke
It's easy to tell a joke. Have you ever heard two people talk about the same joke differently? Although both authors use the same words and tell the same tale, each one used different pace and voice to tell the tale. The joke has as much to do with the delivery of each piece of the joke as the words. Jokes also have an element of truth to them. The storyteller occasionally uses misdirection to hold the element of surprise at the end, as the magician does.
A number of quips make us laugh out loud. Laughter is the day's theme, from knock jokes to riddles and long tales with comedic endings.
