People choose to work or volunteer in public service for a variety of reasons. Some do it for the public's welfare. For example, a lawyer may provide low-cost or free services for the public good. Some people work in public service to gain valuable work experience or for mentoring and networking opportunities.
The United Nations has long recognized the important service workers do in their communities. The United Nations has long understood the roles public service workers play in their societies. They established the UN Public Service Awards for this reason. The awards promote and recognize innovation and excellence in public services.
The winners of these awards are divided into five regional groups. These include Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin American and the Caribbean, and Western Asia. The prestigious award has been given to more than 250 projects. These projects have ranged from promoting gender equality to improving health care.
