Depending on the type of nystagmus, medications, and symptoms, results will vary. About 1 in every 1000 babies are born with nystagmus, but adults are also affected by it.

Nystagmus is seen as drifting or wobbly eyes with two specific forms of nystagmus.

  • Jerk nystagmus – The eyes jerk quickly in one direction and are followed by slow movements in the opposite direction, as the name implies
  • Pendular nystagmus – The eyes move in either direction at the same rate

There are also 5 classifications of diagnoses for the condition. One of those is congenital nystagmus, which physicians diagnose mainly in infants or childhood. However, acquired nystagmus can be triggered by illness or side effects of prescription or misjudged medications. Congenital nystagmus is more common of the two species.

Many with nystagmus face a variety of difficulties. The condition can cause severe vision loss, causing them to be legally blind. They often face self-image and social problems because their eye movements set them apart from others. The day aims to eliminate some of these fears by raising awareness and eliminating stigma.

Although no cure exists, contact lenses, glasses, insulin, and even surgical intervention are all common problems. Early intervention is crucial in several disorders. As with many disorders, early intervention is crucial. A physician will determine the type and source of nystagmus and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.
