International Plastic Free Day
International Plastic Free Day is a call to action that draws attention to the plastic we use every day. On May 25th, pledge to using no single-use plastic for a day (including bottles, take-out food containers, utensils, bags, and wrappers).
Plastic is made every year in over 380 million tonnes. Plastic made in half is single-use, implying that it is thrown away after just one use. Since only 9% of all plastic is recycled, the bulk of it ends up littering our streets, filling our landfills, and polluting our oceans.
International Plastic Free Day raises the issue of how much plastic we use every day and how we can use less of it. Consider all of the ways single-use plastic is used in our daily lives: Consider all of the ways single-use plastic is used in our daily lives: Consider all of the ways single-use plastic is used in our daily lives:
- Beverage bottles
- Plastic jugs are used to clean chemicals. Plastic jugs are used to clean plastic jugs
- To-go containers
- Food packaging
- Cups, straws, lids
- Storage bags
- Product packaging
Participation is straightforward: Say "No" to single-use plastics for one day. Don't buy it, refuse it, and don't use it. The day also helps with the conversion of recyclable products into single-use plastics. For example, the swap: For example, swap: For example, swap: For example, swap: swap:
- Reusable bamboo straw straws make it possible to make single-use straws
- Both hot and cold beverages can be enjoyed in a reusable tumbler
- For shopping, reusable cloth bags are used
- Sandwiches and snacks are served in Silicone bags
- Compostable garbage bags are compostable
